Buon Ma Thuot Coffee-Growing Region: Why Is It Known as the “Coffee Capital?

Buon Ma Thuot, the capital of Dak Lak Province, is Vietnam’s largest Robusta-growing region and one of the world’s key Robusta production areas. The region is closely associated with Robusta rather than Arabica due to its distinctive natural conditions: an average elevation of only 500–800 meters above sea level and a warm, humid tropical climate throughout the year — conditions that are well suited to Robusta, which generally thrives at elevations below 1,000 meters and temperatures of around 24–29°C. By contrast, Arabica prefers cooler climates and elevations above 1,000 meters, so it is mainly cultivated in other regions such as Lam Dong, Son La, and Kon Tum.

The fertile red basalt soil of Dak Lak, combined with a distinct day–night temperature range, allows Robusta plants to develop and accumulate flavor compounds effectively. This produces coffee beans with a bold flavor, characteristic bitterness, full body, and high caffeine content — qualities that perfectly complement the traditional Vietnamese phin coffee experience. This is also why Dak Lak Robusta is highly regarded for its sensory quality compared with Robusta from many other regions around the world.
